NEW DELHI, Reuters – Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated Tuesday that the budget she has prepared for 2022/2023 would lay the groundwork for economic growth via public investment when Asia’s third largest economy recovers from a slump caused by a pandemic.
Government projections for growth range from 8% to 8.5%, compared to an estimate 9.2% and 6.6% respectively in previous years.
Sitharaman declared, beginning her speech to parliament on budget, which will outline spending, tax collections, and the fiscal gap.
The Indian Prime Minister announced a spending of 200 billion Rupees (2.68 billion dollars) on a highway extension programme, and stated that 400 trains will be built in the coming three years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared infrastructure building a priority in order to reduce the cost of doing businesses.
Sitharaman stated that the “touchstone” of the masterplan will be a world-class infrastructure and logistic synergy between different modes of transportation of people and goods.
The expectation of increased public spending led to shares rising in the lead-up the federal budget.
However, concerns have grown about inflation and the loss of tens to thousands of jobs due to the effects of the pandemic. Sitharaman showed empathy for those affected by COVID-19, which decimated India’s second wave of the pandemic last year.
