(Reuters) – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback Tom Brady announced Tuesday that he would be retiring after a remarkable career in which he was a Super Bowl champion.

Brady was 44 years old when he played 20 seasons for the New England Patriots. He won six Super Bowl championships before moving to Tampa Bay where he led the Bucs in last year’s title win.

Brady shared his thoughts on Twitter (NYSE:).

I have been able to achieve my maximum potential by overcoming every physical, mental, or emotional obstacle that comes along. These past 22 years, I’ve tried to do my best. Success in the field and life is not easy.

It is hard for me to write this, but it goes. I won’t make this competitive commitment any more. My NFL career was a joy. Now it’s time for me to devote my energy and time on things I enjoy.
