WASHINGTON (Reuters] – After members vote in a referendum, which was part of a 2020 Justice Department settlement for a corruption probe, the United Auto Workers (UAW), will direct elect officers.
The results of Tuesday’s referendum were approved by U.S. district judge David Lawson, Detroit. He ordered that the changes be made before June to allow time for next year’s union election cycle. In the Justice Department settlement, which included the charges that led to two UAW presidents being convicted, the union of 2020 also accepted a monitor from an independent court.
