U.S. lightning bolt leaps into record books at 768 km long -Breaking

GENEVA, (Reuters) – A single lightning bolt leapt over three states in the United States of America on Tuesday was deemed the longest known.

A megaflash is a rare low-rate horizontal wave that traveled 768 kilometers (477 miles) between cloud cover in Mississippi and Texas. It was dubbed “a megaflash”. The satellite technology used to detect it was used by scientists. A World Meteorological Organization committee confirmed its existence.

Clare Nullis from WMO said that the trip would have taken a few hours by plane and was done in just seconds.

Another megaflash, which occurred over Uruguay and Argentina, in June 2020, also established a record at 17.1 seconds.

These megaflashes, which were not recorded by the new catalogues, serve to remind us of the dangers associated with a weather phenomenon that can kill hundreds every year.

“We reiterate our message: when thunder roars, when you see lightning – go indoors. Don’t seek shelter in a beach hut, don’t stand under a tree,” Nullis said.
