Moderna’s Covid vaccine for teens awaits OK as regulators review heart inflammation risk

Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccination for teens has been delayed since the Food and Drug Administration examined the possibility of serious heart disease in young people who have received either Pfizer’s or company’s vaccines.

Moderna sought emergency approval of Covid for 12–17 year-olds in June. In October, the FDA advised the company that it would not be completing its review of the vaccine before January.

According to the FDA, it took longer time to assess myocarditis risk in vaccines that were based on mRNA technology. Both company shots use mRNA technology. CNBC reported Wednesday that the FDA stated in a statement it’s conducting the review fast but could not predict the length of the evaluation. According to the FDA, this review will determine if the vaccine’s benefits outweigh any risks for adolescents.

Messenger RNA (or mRNA vaccines) uses genetic code to instruct cells how to produce a protein which triggers an immune reaction if someone is infected by a virus. Traditional vaccines, like Johnson and Johnson’s, put inactivate germs into our bodies.

Moderna stated in October that it will wait for the FDA’s approval to approve its vaccine for children aged 6-11 years old until teenagers are given the go-ahead. Moderna expects data to be published in March on the vaccine it has developed for children aged 2-5 years old.

According to the National, Heart Lung and Blood Institute, myocarditis refers to inflammation of the heart muscle. This can cause serious health issues. Myocarditis is most commonly caused by viral infections. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, myocarditis is more common in people who have had Covid vaccines than those who have not. The risk to their hearts can also be greater.

According to Nature Reviews Cardiology, the risk of developing myocarditis due to Covid exposure is 100 times greater than that from vaccination. According to this paper, myocarditis caused by Covid is a risk factor that can lead to death in between 20% to 70%. However, myocarditis from vaccination has a lower risk than myocarditis.

Jose Romero was the ex-chair of the CDC’s Independent Committee of Vaccine Experts. He said that myocarditis caused by vaccinations is usually mild and can be treated quickly.

Romero who is Arkansas’ secretary of public health said, “Whereas myocarditis caused by Covid it’s more severe and lasts longer. And the mortality rate may be significant.”

After contracting Covid, children are much more susceptible to developing multisystem inflammatory disorder (MIS-C), than they were after receiving vaccine-induced heart disease. Since the start of the epidemic, MIS–C has affected more than 6,000 children. MIS-C is a common condition that can affect the heart and cause myocarditis, as well other serious complications. According to the CDC at least 55 children have been killed by MIS-C.

Children’s Health Care of Atlanta’s pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Matthew Oster stated that MISC is more common than Iocarditis and makes children sicker. Oster explained that 13 children were admitted to Children’s of Atlanta with myocarditis following vaccination, compared with more than 400 with MIS-C.

Oster, Director of Children’s Cardiac Outcomes Research Program said that “more than half” of children admitted to ICU with MIS-C. It is more frequent and far more severe than the myocarditis resulting from vaccines.

Studies in French and Nordic

Moderna’s vaccine to adolescents was subjected to closer examination in the autumn. Both Nordic and French studies found that myocarditis rates among young adults and adolescents who received Moderna’s second vaccine were higher than those of Pfizer. according to the European Medicines Agency. Moderna claimed in October it did not observe an increase in the risk of myocarditis among people under age 18. Moderna said that the company is currently reviewing external data, and it will work with FDA to assist in the evaluation. Romero believes that the FDA made the right decision to wait until it has as much information as possible before making decisions.

According to the CDC, myocarditis usually occurs one week following the second dose. Patients describe symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, or feeling like their heart is racing.

The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study that found 96% of the over 800 cases of myocarditis in children under the age of 30 had been admitted for treatment. But, the majority of these patients were able to recover and were released. This data was based upon 1,626 cases of myocarditis reported to CDC/FDA databases from December 2020 through August.

Hospital stays for short periods

Oster, who was also one of the co-authors, stated that the hospital stays were very short, and the children are often able to recover from their pain medications.

Oster stated that it is recommended that patients with heart disease refrain from intense physical activity for at least a few months to ensure a complete recovery. However, Oster noted that the good news is that many people are improving and the long-term results look promising.

According to the study, young men aged 16-17 reported myocarditis rates that were higher after receiving a second dose Pfizer vaccine. They had 106 cases for every 1,000,000 shots, while those in their 12th and 15th years experienced 71 cases each million doses. Oster also stated traditional myocarditis in teenagers is higher.

Scientists are currently investigating the causes of myocarditis following vaccination. Many scientists believe that testosterone could play some role. Moderna and Pfizer both use two-dose vaccines. Moderna, however, uses a 30-microgram dose for anyone older than 12. This is significantly lower than Moderna’s 100-microgram dosage. Romero warned against drawing any conclusions about the doses of both mRNA vaccines, as they each have their own differences. For example, they use different fatty balloons to transport the mRNA material into cells. Cells then begin producing proteins to induce immunity to the virus.

American Academy of Pediatrics vice-chair of infectious disease Dr. Sean O’Leary stated that driving is a risky decision. This could lead to myocarditis for their child. He said that the Covid risk is far greater than the vaccine’s.
