Florida governor to investigate GoFundMe over Canada trucker donations -Breaking

(Reuters] – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stated Saturday that GoFundMe was fraudulent in requesting $9 million to help protesting Canadian truckdrivers. DeSantis also said that he is going to investigate “deceptive” practices by the site.

GoFundMe removed Friday’s Freedom Convoy page from its website, claiming it had violated their terms of service. The site stated that donors would have two weeks to ask for a refund and then the remaining funds will be distributed to credible, established charities.

DeSantis (a Republican) stated on Twitter that GoFundMe was committing fraud by allowing the money to be given “to causes they choose.” He would collaborate with Ashley Moody, Florida Attorney General, to conduct an investigation. The recipients should receive a refund.

GoFundMe didn’t immediately reply to a Reuters inquiry regarding DeSantis tweet.

On Saturday, the company stated in a Tweet that due to “donor feedback”, it had simplified the process and would refund any donations to Freedom Convoy 2022.

“This refund will happen automatically — you do not need to submit a request. GoFundMe tweeted that donors can expect refunds in 7-10 days.

The movement started as an opposition to cross-border truckers being required to have a vaccination, but it is now a point of resistance against all public health measures.

Eight days of protestors have closed downtown Ottawa. Participants waved Confederate and Nazi flags, while some said that they were attempting to dissolve Canada’s government.

On Saturday, protests from Ottawa caused disruptions in cities including Toronto’s financial center. This raised fears about clashes and counter protesters.
