KHARKIV, Ukraine (Reuters – Thousands of people marched in the second-largest Ukrainian city. They carried banners saying: “Kharkiv IS Ukraine” as they prepared for a Russian military invasion.
After Russia positioned tens and thousands of troops close to Ukraine’s border, weeks of diplomatic diplomacy between Moscow and the West have not resulted in any breakthrough.
Moscow claims it has no plans to attack Ukraine. However, Moscow demanded security assurances including an injunction against Ukraine joining NATO.
Kharkiv is an east industrial city located 42km (26 miles) away from Russia’s border. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zilenskiy identified Kharkiv as a potential Russian target. However, his spokesperson later stated that he was only speculating.
Kharkiv protestors sang the Ukrainian national anthem while waving Ukrainian flags. They also waved flags that were raised by allies, such as Britain, the United States of America, and the European Union.
Nina Kvitko, Kharkiv resident, said “People marched to Kharkiv because they know that Kharkiv was a Ukrainian capital and will not give it up.”
