LONDON, (Reuters) – Queen Elizabeth of Britain said Saturday that Prince Charles’s wife Camilla should be crowned Queen Consort. This would cement her position at the heart the royal family.

Elizabeth wrote a note to commemorate the 70th anniversary her accession. She said that the occasion gave her time to think about the British people’s loyalty and love.

She expressed her hope that Charles and Camilla will receive the same support.

Elizabeth stated, “It is my sincere desire that Camilla, when it comes, will be known for her loyal service as Queen Consort.”

Charles and Camilla were longtime friends. They got married in Windsor in 2005. Clarence House said that Charles and Camilla were touched by the words of Her Majesty on Saturday.

Elizabeth’s decision reflects wider acceptance of Camilla as a Royal.

She is no longer the target of tabloid newspapers as she was in the decade that followed the 1997 death of Princess Diana, Charles’ first wife.

Camilla, whose title at the moment is Duchess Cornwall, now represents Charles and Charles in official duties.

The title of Queen Consort is a common British title given to the spouse of kings throughout British history. Officially, Camilla was to use the title of Princess Consort for Charles’s upcoming reign.

Elizabeth turns 70 on Sunday and celebrates a remarkable stretch of time on the British throne. But the anniversary is also a momentous occasion for the royal family.

The U.S. case involving her son Prince Andrew, and the allegations made by Prince Harry and her granddaughter about racism within the royal family have all brought attention to the subject.

Philip, her husband for 73 years, died last year. She was acknowledged by her in a Saturday letter.

“It was a blessing that I found Prince Philip, who willingly accepted the consort role and made the selfless sacrifices necessary to fulfill it. Elizabeth said that this is the role my mother played during my father’s reign.

POMP AND POIGNANCY

Elizabeth hosted celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary her accession the throne. She invited local communities to Sandringham, in the east end of England.

Pictured smiling in a light-blue dress, the queen cut a celebratory birthday cake made by a local resident. A concert band performed “Congratulations.”

In a letter she wrote to the public, she stated that “I am eternally grateful and humbled for the loyalty and affection you continue to show me.”

Ironically, Elizabeth did not have the destiny to be monarch when she was born. Instead, Edward VIII, Elizabeth’s uncle abdicated so that he could be with Wallis Simpson (an American divorcée).

However, Victoria was overtaken by her in 2015. This is a title that can be traced back at Norman King William I’s conquest of England in 1066.

The weekend’s low-key events serve as a preview to greater pomp and celebration to celebrate the platinum anniversary in early June. In that case, the government will create an additional public holiday.

Elizabeth stated that the anniversary meant to her a time of reflection, and poignancy.

She wrote, “It’s a day I remember as much about the death of King George VI as it is for the beginning of my reign.”

“As this year marks its anniversary, I am pleased to remind you of the promise that I made in 1947: My life will be dedicated to your service.”
