MEXICO CITY, (Reuters) – Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission asked immigration officials to accelerate the process that will allow nearly 2,000 Mexican migrants to get documentation to either regularize their stay or travel freely through Mexico.

According to a statement by the Commission, migrants (including minors) currently live in “contempt for their dignity” near Tapachula’s southern border. It stated that the National Migration Institute (INM), and Commission for Refugee Assistance(COMAR) must provide urgent humanitarian aid to these migrants.

It stated that the INM and COMAR were asked to create immediate working groups to accelerate the migratory irregularization or recognition of refugee status.

After the appropriate identification documents are issued, the INM should also guarantee that “free transit” through the national territory is possible for people.

On Thursday https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/protesting-migrants-southern-mexico-threaten-form-new-caravan-2022-02-04, hundreds of migrants in Tapachula protested against the slow pace of government visa approvals and threatened to form a fresh caravan that would head to the U.S. border.

COMAR and the INM did not immediately respond to inquiries for comment. The INM declared last week that migrants are not required to participate in marches and demonstrations in order for them to fill out their paperwork.

Mexico tried to curb large numbers of migrants travelling in caravans bound for the U.S. amid Washington’s pressure.

Tens of thousands flee their homelands each year to seek asylum in the United States. However, many also look for protection and refuge in Mexico.
