(Reuters) NBC’s coverage of Saturday’s opening ceremony at the Beijing Olympic Games was viewed by an average of 14 million viewers per day, according to preliminary information provided to NBCUniversal by Comcast.

The average audience was close to 16 million across all platforms. This includes NBCOlympics.com as well as the NBC Sports App. China has denied wrongdoing and claims camps for Uyghurs offer vocational training and help curb religious extremism.

Beijing Games is the second Olympics NBC will broadcast under the pandemic coronavirus. It offers an opportunity to fine tune its strategy based upon the lessons learned last summer. Since 1988, when NBC first broadcast the Summer Games, the Tokyo Games were postponed for a year due to the pandemic. However, the broadcasts of the Tokyo Games still enjoyed the greatest audience on TV and were attractive advertising showcases.

For Beijing, NBC said it is doing more to simplify the viewing experience, addressing criticism that last summer’s content was difficult to find across the company’s many platforms, including its Peacock streaming service.

NBC is streaming every Beijing event live on Peacock’s premium tier, in addition to airing coverage across the NBC broadcast network, USA Network and CNBC cable networks, NBCOlympics.com website and NBC Sports app. It is also offering a customizable schedule on NBCOlympics.com, and air on-screen cues during studio segments that remind viewers what’s coming up.

NBCUniversal was paid $7.65B to continue its U.S. broadcast rights through 2032 for the Olympics.
