ZHANGJIAKOU (China) -Zoi Synnott, New Zealand, said that she felt proud after winning the gold medal in women’s skistyle at the Beijing Olympics. She also won the country’s first ever Winter Games gold medal.
Rival snowboarders claimed that the final run of the 20-year old pushed the field’s women to the next level, and they called it a huge leap forward for the sport.
Sadowski-Synnott was 92.88 in her last run. She landed back-to-back 1080s over a difficult course that resembled the Great Wall of China.
She said that it was a proud moment to have been the first Gold Medalist at the Winter Games in her home country.
“I hope they were happy, and I will be celebrating for them,” she stated.
Sean Thompson, her coach, stated that everyone was going “crazy” at home after the victory.
“She’s incredible and deserves every single bit,” he stated.
New Zealand’s winner overcame a strong field, which included Jamie Anderson, the current two-time gold medalist. Anderson was unable to make it onto the podium as she stated that she “blew it” Sunday.
Julia Marino, from the United States took silver. Sadowski-Synnott said that she was elevating women’s slopestyle competition and putting down tricks previously done only by men.
Marino stated that Marino “stomped” the line to the end, and she felt “overcome by happiness” for the winners.
“It’s just insanely important for the progress of the sport,” she stated.
Sadowski-Synnott’s final trick was landed, and her cheerleaders erupted, waving the flag of their home country as well as another one displaying black and silver ferns.
Tess Coady of Australia, bronze winner, leapt on top the Kiwis at the finish, while Marino joined the fray.
“I felt less cobwebby yesterday.” Coady added that she was determined to improve her performance and that she had been listening to a podcast that focused on snowboarding.
Sunny skies, but heavy snow made it difficult for the participants to boarders. Temperatures dropped as low as -19.6 Celsius at Genting Snow Park Zhangjiakou.
According to snowboarders, the course is more difficult than any others.
Anderson was ninth place in the finals and lost her title. Anderson then paused to give an interview. Then she turned toward the awards ceremony and listened in silence as the winners were announced.
