(Reuters] – Ahmaud Abery was a Black jogger of 25 years who was being chased and shot by three men while running on Sunday in a predominantly-white neighborhood in Georgia. Arbery was killed on February 23, 2020.

Travis McMichael (36) was found guilty, as well his father Gregory McMichael (66) and William Bryan (52), of murder, among other charges. Bryan, the only person who was eligible for parole, received a life sentence.

They are now being tried in federal hate crime charges at the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Georgia.

What is FEDERAL HATE?

A federal hate crime refers to a criminal offense committed because of race, religion, gender, nationality or sexual orientation.

GREGORY MCMICHAEL

* Interference with rights – a hate crime- specifically for “willfully, by force and threat of force, injure, intimidate and interfere with Ahmaud Arbery, an African American man, because of Arbery’s race and color.” This charge can lead to a life sentence.

* Attempted kidnapping, punishable by 20 years in prison.

* Brandishing a firearm, punishable by 7 years in prison.

TRAVIS MCMICHAEL

* Interference with rights – a hate crime- specifically for “willfully, by force and threat of force, injure, intimidate and interfere with Ahmaud Arbery, an African American man, because of Arbery’s race and color.” This charge can lead to a life sentence.

* Attempted kidnapping, punishable by 20 years in prison.

* Brandishing and discharging a firearm, punishable by 10 years in prison.
