© Reuters. KUALA LUMPUR – Supermax Corp Bhd, a Malaysian glovemaker, announced Tuesday that it has rolledout a new foreign worker management strategy. This expands its scope for remediation of recruitment fees and includes former workers who were directly employed or contracted.
Supermax stated in a filing with the stock exchange that the policy covers workers who have left the company prior to October 2019.
Supermax is facing an import ban from the U.S. Customs in October because of indications that it uses forced labor at its operations. Canada also terminated last month its sourcing agreement with Supermax on the basis of similar claims.
The workers at the company sought to have the British government’s December decision to accept the company as a supplier for its National Health Service reviewed by a court of law.
According to the manufacturer, new measures and updated eligibility criteria were agreed on after consulting an international consultancy firm as well as ongoing interaction with Andy Hall, a migrant rights activist.
Supermax also stated that it had engaged an international consulting company to evaluate and provide advice on all workers’ payouts, track back and locate workers returning to their homelands and to find them.
For the remediation efforts, the company will establish a sinking fund that will be managed by an advisory board. It will then be reviewed once it is depleted.
According to Supermax, the company has paid out 25.67 mil ringgit ($6.13million) for remediation costs. These include ex-gratia payments, past employee fees, and any other associated costs.
