BEIJING, (Reuters) – The Russian figure skaters that won Monday’s team event at Beijing Olympics have not yet received their gold medals. Media reports said on Wednesday that one of them had tested positive for drugs.
The International Olympic Committee of International Skating Union, Russian Olympic Committee, and International Olympic Committee declined to comment on reports in USA Today or The Guardian.
In media reports, it was unclear when and where the substance came from. Under Olympic rules, performance-enhancing drugs attract a different penalty to those for recreational use.
On Monday, the Russian team won and so the medal ceremony had to be postponed. It has not yet taken place. In the final competition, Japan won bronze and silver for USA.
On Wednesday, IOC announced that the ceremony of the medals had been delayed due to legal consultations, but it said the event would still go ahead.
Mark Adams, IOC spokesperson said “An unusual situation arises at short notice which requires legal consultation.”
You can place your money on us doing all we can to resolve this problem as quickly as possible. Although I am unable to give more information, we will make every effort.
Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Kremlin, said that they will wait until official statements are made before commenting.
Kamila Valieva was 15 years old and landed quadruple leaps in Olympic competition. Mark Kondratiuk and Aleksandr Galliamov were both pairs dancers.
The two did not attend Wednesday’s practice session.
Victoria Sinitsina, ice dancer, and Nikita Katzsalapov (who were also part of the winning team) showed up to morning practice.
The Russian ice dancing team did not train at the session scheduled for them on Wednesday at the Capital Indoor Stadium.
Russian athletes will compete in Beijing to represent the ROC, rather than their homeland due to doping restrictions.
