REUTERS/StaffBEIJING, (Reuters) – The International Olympic Committee (IOC), has responded to the query of Peng Shuai (Chinese tennis player) after she was reunited with her at the Beijing Olympics.
The well-being of Peng, former world number one double, became a concern worldwide when she claimed on social media that Zhang Gaoli (an ex-Chinese vice premier) had sexually assaulted and abused her.
She disappeared for almost three weeks after that posting, which was swiftly removed. The Women’s Tennis Association also suspended any tournaments in China due to concerns about her safety.
The IOC’s stance on the issue has been criticized before. Human Rights Watch stated that the IOC seemed interested in keeping the Games running smoothly, and not for the well-being of the athletes. This was a criticism rejected by the committee.
Peng, a three-time Olympian was not present at the Games. However, speculations grew when the IOC stated that it would meet Peng in Beijing.
Peng said that she has never accused any person of sexual assault in an interview conducted on Sunday. Bach was with her Saturday night for dinner.
“We wanted to know the answer to everyone’s question, “Where is Peng Shuai?” Bach explained to reporters that this is why she had chosen the human-centered approach right from the beginning.
We invited her to meet us here because we wanted everyone to see that it’s not a one-off event. The contact with her will not be lost. We have answered the question, “Where’s Peng Shuai?” Then we continue our conversation by inviting her to Lausanne.
Bach indicated that the IOC’s headquarters will be in Geneva and said the meeting would likely occur during the summer months. IOC said that it will support her decision regarding her allegation regardless of whether or not she wants an investigation.
Peng attended many Games sports events, including curling and Big Air. Peng smiled at the spectators.
Bach stated that “you could see it in the appearances she is enjoying these Games, enjoying being with athletes and the general public, and that is why we continue to have this contact.”
It is all about taking care of her. It is an individual thing. It’s about one person, their feelings and emotions.
“I wish I could meet her again during the summer in Lausanne, to prove that the Games are not over.” This is an ongoing effort.
