WASHINGTON, (Reuters) –Top U.S. Senate Republican Mitch McConnell criticized Tuesday’s party’s censure two prominent Republican critics Donald Trump. He joined an intra-party fight that may endanger his attempts to present a party image of moderation during this year’s midterm election.

Last week, the Republican National Committee censured https://www.reuters.com/world/us/loyal-trump-republican-party-moves-censure-us-reps-cheney-kinzinger-2022-02-04 Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, the only two Republicans serving on the House of Representatives select committee investigating the events of Jan. 6, 2021, when supporters of then-President Trump stormed the Capitol in a failed attempt to prevent Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

The issue here is whether the RNC should single out party members who might have differing views to the majority. McConnell said that it was not the RNC’s task to do this.

The RNC took action Friday and called the Democratic-led inquiry into political discourse an attack against “legitimate political discourse”.

McConnell rebutted that statement, saying “We witnessed what happened.” This was an insurrection to stop the peaceful transfer power from the previous administration after it had been legitimately certified. It was exactly that.

As Republicans seek to gain majorities in the Senate and House in the Nov. 8, midterm elections, the controversy has arisen.

McConnell, the Senate minor leader and one his most wily political tactics, tried to paint Biden, a former moderate radicalized left-wing Democrat, as McConnell. It could be a way for Republicans to project a moderation image in key states, which would help their Senate candidates.

McConnell-related lawmakers have become defensive regarding the RNC censure resolution.

“They stated in the resolution that they want Republicans unification. It was not an unifying act,” explained Senator John Cornyn, Texas.

Senate Republican leaders recognized the dangers that party divisions may pose for Republican Senate candidate candidates.

Senator John Thune (the chamber’s No. 1) stated that “if we want to win November’s elections, there are other things for us be focused on.” 2 Republican after McConnell.

The focus should be on the future, and not backwards. Thune said that if we are to win majorities in fall elections, it is better to focus our attention on Democrats rather than on each other.

Other observers pointed out the RNC’s criticism by Senate Republican as an issue for some candidates from certain states.

“Whatever your opinion is about the RNC’s vote, it reflects most Republicans,” stated Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, who opposed the 2020 results.

He said, “In my state it’s not useful to have a bunch D.C. Republicans commenting about the RNC…super unhelpful.”

Democrats may be vulnerable in November, particularly considering Biden’s falling public approval https://graphics.reuters.com/USA-BIDEN/POLL/nmopagnqapa numbers in opinion polls. The party that is currently governing the White House usually loses its congressional seats during the first round of midterm elections.

McConnell attempted to paint Biden and his controversial “Build back Better” social spending plan, which is currently stalled in Congress as being of the Democratic Party’s left wing. McConnell accused Biden, of not paying attention to problems facing American families like inflation and higher energy prices.

McConnell stated last month that if the president acts like a moderate like he campaigned for, then we can get business done.

McConnell may be calling for bipartisanship. However, McConnell has always been a partisan fighter. As majority leader, he refused to consider Democratic President Barack Obama’s nominee to fill a Supreme Court vacancy and last year said https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/republican-mcconnell-signals-blockade-any-2024-biden-high-court-nominee-2021-06-14 he might block Biden’s nominees to the high court if Republicans gain Senate control. He has also used Senate filibuster to block Biden’s legislative agenda. This includes voting rights.

McConnell was able to deliver two crucial Republican votes for last year’s bipartisan priorities, a $1 Trillion infrastructure bill and an agreement to avoid default on the federal government’s debt. Trump demanded McConnell be fired from the Senate leadership position.
