WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The United States will send 3,000 more troops to Poland over the next few days in an effort to reassure NATO allies. This was revealed by four U.S. officials to Reuters Friday as Russia conducted military exercises in Belarus, the Black Sea, and in response to its buildup forces in Ukraine.
Russia is massing more troops near Ukraine and an invasion could come at any time, perhaps before the end of this month’s Winter Olympics, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/us-says-russia-masses-more-troops-near-ukraine-invasion-could-come-any-time-2022-02-11.
A private U.S. firm published satellite images that showed Russian military installations at various locations close to Ukraine.
Officials spoke on condition of anonymity to say that the U.S. troops will be deployed from the 82nd Airborne Division, and not within U.S. forces operating in Europe.
Officials described the deployment as significant.
These troops are on top of the 8.500 soldiers already alert and ready to deploy in Europe, if necessary. They also include the almost 3,000 American troops that the Administration announced earlier this month would be deployed to Poland or Romania.
The White House Situation Room hosted President Joe Biden’s meeting with his national security advisors Thursday night. They discussed Russia’s military buildup in Ukraine.
Russia has already gathered more than 100,000 troops in Ukraine and launched this week joint military exercises in Belarus, as well as naval drills at the Black Sea.
Moscow has denied plans to invade Ukraine. However, it says that it might take an unspecified military-technical action, if certain demands are not met. These include promises from NATO not to admit Ukraine and to pull out forces from Eastern Europe.
Both the United States of America and Britain warned that an invasion could occur within days.
Despite not having any vessels in the Black Sea, the United States Navy sent four more destroyers to Europe over the past weeks.
