WINDSOR, Ontario/WASHINGTON/OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada’s Ontario province declared a state of emergency on Friday and Premier Doug Ford threatened fines and jail terms as authorities came under increasing pressure from the United States to end anti-vaccine mandate protests that has drastically cut trade between the two nations.
The “Freedom Convoy” by Canadian truckers opposing a vaccinate-or-quarantine mandate for cross-border drivers, mirrored by the U.S. government, began with the occupation of the Canadian capital, Ottawa. Truckers also blocked two smaller border crossings and the Ambassador Bridge, which was shut down earlier in this week.
Officials are trying to minimize economic harm by closing the bridge which is North America’s most important international land border crossing.
Ford stated in a Friday press conference that he would convene Cabinet and use the legal authorities to immediately enact orders to make it clear it’s illegal and punishable for blocking or preventing movement of people, goods and services along critical infrastructure.
Ford promised new legal actions against protesters including possible jail time and fines for those who do not comply with government orders.
Gretchen Whitmer, the Michigan governor, said Friday that she had been pushing Canada to end the protest and that it was hurting her state.
Whitmer said in an interview to CNN that “the Canadian government needs to do all it takes to solve this safely and quickly.”
Canadian autoparts maker Magna International (NYSE) On Friday, the Ambassador Bridge was shut down. It is believed that this has had an impact on certain areas of company operations. The company became the latest to be swept up by the truckers’ protest. Stock fell by 4.4%.
On Thursday, the Biden administration urged Canada that it use its federal power to reduce disruption.

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s Prime Minister, stated that he is working closely with local leaders to break the blockade. Marco Mendicino (Public Safety Minister) stated federal police officers would be stationed in Windsor, close to the bridge, as well as to Ottawa.
Mendicino has been scheduled to meet with the U.S. According to his office, Alejandro Mayorkas is the Homeland Security Secretary.
Windsor police, Ontario bordering Detroit said that they have received extra resources from other jurisdictions in order to support a peaceful solution to the demonstration near and at the Ambassador Bridge.
Police in Ottawa, epicenter of protests was waiting for the completion of a request to federal and provincial reinforcements. So far, they have arrested 25 people. Peter Sloly, chief of the City Police expects reinforcements will arrive within the next 48 hours in anticipation of an increase in demonstrators in the area over the weekend.
This is a highly skilled group of demonstrators. Sloly stated that they have the ability to manage strong organizations here in both provincial and national settings.
Canada sends 75% its exports to America and the bridge typically handles around 8,000 trucks per hour. That’s 25% of all cross-border commerce, which is approximately C$500 million or $3392.56 million per day.
Auto parts worth approximately C$100 millions cross the border every day. Many shipments are timed so that they arrive at their destination just in time for manufacturers.
General Motors Co. (NYSE:), Ford Motors Co. (NYSE:) Co. Chrysler parent Stellantis and Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE 🙂 Corp has been affected by blockades.
Despite the fact that officials from the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal levels regularly meet, their impact has been limited on the ground.
Drew Dilkens of Windsor has asked for an injunction by the Ontario Superior Court. This will allow the protesters to be removed from the bridge. Drew also said that he was trying to solve the problem peacefully to ensure no one gets hurt.
While many Western nations are nearing the two year mark in coronavirus restrictions due to pandemic fatigue, protests spread to Australia and New Zealand. However, the Omicron virus variant, which is highly contagious, has started to recede in certain areas.
