China issues blizzard alert in first Beijing snowfall of Olympics -Breaking

BEIJING, (Reuters) – The China Meterological Administration has issued a blizzard alert for Sunday. It warns that significant snowfall will be expected in many parts of northern China, including Beijing. Beijing is the capital of the Winter Olympics.

It was the capital’s first snowfall since Feb. 4th, when the Winter Olympics started.

Eileen Gu (Team China Gold Medalist) was the Women’s Freeski Slopestyle Qualification in Zhangjiakou. The event was moved to Sunday because of the snow.

Authorities issued a blue-blizzard alert, which is the lowest among the country’s four-tiered warnings. Some regions are expected to get up to 4 cm (11.6 inches) of snow. They advised citizens to limit their outside activities.

According to the notice from China Meterological Administration, “It’s expected that there will be heavy skidding in central and southern Inner Mongolia and northern Hebei,” as well as northern Shanxi and central Hebei.

Beijing temperatures dropped, with the Beijing Meteorological Observatory forecasting a minimum temperature of -6 degrees Celsius (21°F). (This article corrects headline to mention the first Beijing snowfall.
