WASHINGTON — Democratic Sen. Ben Ray Lujan, who suffered a stroke in late January, said in a video released Sunday that he will be back in Washington in “a few short weeks” to vote on President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee.
I’m doing great. I’m strong. Lujan declared that “I’m back on track to recovery” and promised to complete his recovery.
Lujan, who was being criticized by his doctors for not following through with major brain surgery that relieved pressure on the brain, said that he would be spending the next few days in an inpatient rehabilitation center.
“I’m proud of reporting, then I will return to the United States Senate’s floor in just few weeks to cast my vote on important legislation as well as to review a Supreme Court nominee,” said he.
Lujan’s team has been very quiet about Lujan’s health for the past two weeks. It is now possible that Lujan may not be able to make a return visit to the Senate soon.
Lujan’s stroke was complicated by the unevenly divided Senate. efforts to quickly appoint a successor to retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.
Lujan was not present in the Senate so Democrats wouldn’t have the necessary 50 votes to confirm the replacement. This would give Republicans the power of veto.
President Joe BidenHe said that he expected to name his nominee before the end of March. President Breyer has promised to choose a Black female to succeed him, and he intends to interview several candidates in the week ahead.
