REUTERS/Stringer MEXICO CITY, (Reuters) – The U.S. government expressed its concern about violence against Mexican journalists two days following the recent killing of a journalist.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico stated on Twitter that they were “disappointed by the situation journalists face in Mexico” (NYSE:). It called the shooting death of Heber Lopez in southern Mexico a “loathsome act.”
It was one more example of a period that has seen media professionals in Mexico experience some of the worst violence in Mexican history.
An investigation into the responsible parties was essential, according to the embassy.
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mexican President, has condemned Lopez’s death and declared that the perpetrators would face “no impunity”. His government confirmed that two suspects were detained and promised to solve the mystery.
Lopez Obrador, however, named the salary for a journalist criticizing his government at the same news conference.
Lopez Obrador has verbally attacked Carlos Loret de Mola over a recent report by a news source and a broadcaster that details the lavish lifestyle enjoyed in Texas by one son of President Barack Obama.
Friday was a day of details for Loret’s 2021 earnings. The president referred to Loret as “corrupt” or “mercenary” among other negative terms.
Loret retorted, accusing him of going after him because he raised questions about his son’s income and said that the salary claims had been wrong and put him in danger.
Later, Loret said that the Mexican institute responsible for data protection would alert any complainant who claimed that Loret had been violated by the disclosures.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Mexico is one of the most dangerous places for journalists and media workers in the world.
