(Reuters). The Leonardo DiCaprio-backed Polestar ad mocking rival Tesla (NASDAQ) and Volkswagen (DE) topped Super Bowl LVI commercials, according to data from Monday.
According to EDO’s consumer search data firm, the 30 second ad for the electric-car manufacturer performed 23 times better that other advertisements during the game. The message, which included “no epic voiceovers”, empty promises, and “no hidden agendas”, was clearly aimed at Mars, as well the Volkswagen Dieselgate.
EDO stated that five of the 20 most popular Super Bowl ads were EV-focused. They were produced by Polestar Kia, Nissan, Chevrolet, and Nissan (OTC), highlighting the growing popularity of electric vehicles on the U.S. Market.
According to data firms, the number of ads promoting electric vehicles has quadrupled over recent years and is expected to rise to 33,000 by 2021. This compares to 8,100 in 2019.
Polestar, owned by China’s Geely, Volvo Cars and China’s Volvo Cars is set to go public in a reverse merge with Gores Guggenheim, a special-purpose acquisition firm (SPAC) in the first half 2022.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded to a tweet by a laughing emoji (NYSE:) when one of his almost 74 million Twitter followers pointed out the Polestar advertisement.
Musk said that Tesla was not interested in marketing spending and would prefer to spend that money on product development.
Another hit this season was BMW’s advertisement featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Salma Hayek Pinault, and Nissan’s 60 second action adventure ad starring Eugene Levy.
