San Francisco (Reuters) – Intel Corp (NASDAQ.) Mobileye (F.) will create and deploy electric self-driving shuttles in cooperation with American partners by 2024. This is in a bid, according to executives to Reuters, to expand its automated driving system beyond taxis.
Mobileye, Benteler EV Systems, and Beep are launching driverless shuttles on demand. These will be 12-14-seat vehicles with no pedal or steering wheel.
Hinrich Woebcken (an advisory board member of Beep Mobility Service Provider) stated that the vehicles would be driven in “contained geofenced areas” with speeds limited to 35 miles per hour.
Mobileye intends to install robotaxis in Israel, Germany and Germany before the end of 2018, subject to regulatory approval. Udelv, a Silicon Valley startup, is working together with Mobileye to deploy automated electric delivery trucks in America by 2023.
Mobileye will prove to U.S. federal and state regulators that its self-driving system would be safer than a human driver, said Johann Jungwirth, vice president of Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) at Mobileye.
He stated, “From a technology standpoint, we are very, very bullish. We feel strongly that technology is actually very close to being ready.”
Executives stated that shuttles would reduce drivers’ costs, solve driver shortages and tackle urban problems like emissions and congestion.
“We see interesting growth opportunities in this autonomous mover and autonomous shuttle market. It is a big blue ocean,” Marco Kollmeier (managing director, Benteler EV Systems GmbH) said.
Benteler EV Systems will make the shuttles in accordance with safety and automotive standards.
