Chinese Technology Companies Consider the Metaverse an Investment Opportunity- Potential market for $8 trillion is available in the metaverse
- Tencent is the Chinese tech giant that could venture in to virtual space. Alibaba (NYSE:), ByteDance, and NetEase are (NASDAQ:).
- Many questions remain about how the Chinese metaverse will look due to strict regulations on technology companies and crackdowns against cryptocurrencies.
Despite heavy regulations and expected censorship, China’s top tech companies plan to embark on the metaverse as well, a potential market of about $8 trillion, according to Morgan Stanley (NYSE:).
Chinese tech giants are following in the footsteps of US global competitors such as Meta – Facebook (NASDAQ:) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:), which have acquired the gaming company, Activision, for this purpose.
Chinese tech firms are cautiously beginning to venture into the virtual universe. In the future, it is possible that the government will have full control over the content of the metaverse. They also expect to enforce strict regulations.
Beijing has maintained strict controls over the activities of its technology firms since last year. The Xi Jinping government has sever the wings of private businesses and prioritized development of state-owned technology firms.
This is a fundamental step forward for Chinese businesses
Alibaba, Tencent (owner of TikTok), Tencent, NetEase, Tencent, and Tencent would all be the leading companies in this metaverse market. Morgan Stanley, a US bank estimates that China has an enormous growth potential. The Chinese market is worth 52 trillion yuan (or $8 trillion).
Winston Ma, CloudTree Ventures managing partner, stated that Metaverse was the future social media. “All China’s tech giants have to embrace it to find new ways to engage the youngest generation of internet users…”
Ma said this step “is critical” at a time of maturing business models for Chinese technology companies, through smartphones and the mobile Internet.
The first virtual world applications to launch in this market will be gaming, virtual reality, and social networking. The market for NFTs, which are non-fungible tokens that allow anyone to purchase anything digitally, will be very popular.
How tech companies think about the metaverse
Representatives from major tech companies believe that the Chinese metaverse will offer great growth opportunities. Pony Ma, CEO of Tencent, stated in November that the technology sector could support growth for the gaming industry.
Tencent is the biggest global gaming company with a large library of games available for both mobile and desktop devices. WeChat is the messaging app with more than 1 million users.
ByteDance, another company who is dedicated to the metaverse is also preparing to fully enter it, is ByteDance. ByteDance has increased its participation in the gaming sector and bought Pico last August, the manufacturer of virtual reality headsets.
Alibaba will make its previously announced augmented reality glasses on its website this year. It can also be used for virtual meetings.
For the Winter Olympics in Beijing, Alibaba launched Dong Dong, a “virtual influencer” that provides information about the Olympics and promotes game items.
According to media reports, NetEase, a mega-game company, has been creating metaverse apps at the Hainan headquarters since last year.
Flipside
- The same antitrust regulations and usage restrictions which apply to Internet platforms from China will likely apply to metaverse spaces. They include the prohibition on online gaming by children under 18 years old.
For Hanyu Liu, a China market analyst at Daxue Consulting, the government “knows just when and where it needs to stay its hand; close enough so that it can keep a careful watch, but not to the point where it would cause irreversible harm to the industry.”
Why you should care
- According to the truth, large tech companies have made investments in China and begun experimentation in this metaverse. However, it’s also possible that it will be a sui generis metaverse because of censorship regulations.
