Bored Wukong is accused by Chinese NFT Collection fans of plagiarismBored Wukong is a Chinese NFT project which bears an amazing resemblance to the Bored Apes NFTs. It has been accused of copying the famous NFT collection.
South China Morning Post said that public reaction to the project was mixed after plagiarism claims were made on WeChat. However, Wang Wendong, the creator of the Bored Wukong NFT collection, insisted that the art is original and that his monkeys have no ties with Yuga Labs’ Bored Apes.
This article was posted to WeChat and attracted more than 243,000 hits. It has also been cited numerous times by Chinese media outlets. Bored Wukong is accused of using design elements similar in appearance to Bored Apes’ facial features.
According to the Bored Wukong website, the collection is an assembly of different impersonations of Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), a legendary character from the classical Chinese novel “Journey to the West.” This claim was backed by the fact that Wang Wendong currently serves as a lecturer at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.
Wendong claimed that his NFT avatars were different than those of Bored Apes. He also said that each monkey was manually drawn to ensure that their unique characteristics are maintained.
He also cited examples from celebrities such as Heath Ledger or Joseph Gordon-Levit, who are said to look similar.
When we discuss film stars, people won’t think about plagiarism. They will instead say that the stars are similar.
He suggested that Bored Wukongs’ prices may have been crashing because of his critics.
Bored Wukongs, just like the other NFT avatar collection, come in a variety of personalized styles. One can be dressed up as Vincent van Gogh, while another is dressed as an Egyptian Pharaoh.
The first Bored Wukong avatar was sold last November for 99 yuan ($15) and according to the item’s transaction history on the Chinese NFT marketplace NFTCN, it was resold in December for 1,888 yuan ($297). The item is available for purchase at 8,888,888yuan.
South China Morning Post reported that Wendong is currently ranked second in NFTCN’s most-popular creators by volume of transactions. He released 390 Bored Wokongs in order to move up the NFT ladder.
NFT platform Cent had to close its doors after growing concern about fakes.
