BEIRUT (Reuters] – Lebanese police tried to summon Riad Salameh, central bank governor, to a hearing in which a judge ordered. However, they were unable, according to a local security source.
State Security of Lebanon, one the main agencies in Lebanon, sought Salameh out in three locations. This included two private residences in Beirut as well as his office at the capital’s central bank, according to the source.
On February 1, Judge Ghada Aoun subpoenaed Salameh after he had failed to show up at three hearings in an investigation into his alleged misconduct, including fraud, at the central bank. There are several more investigations underway in Lebanon as well as several European countries.
Salameh has repeatedly denied wrongdoing but described the allegations against him as being politically motivated. Reuters did not receive a response on Tuesday.
He had previously accused Judge Aoun, of bias, and has asked for her to resign from the investigation against him.
Aoun said Tuesday to Reuters that she indefinitely extended her subpoena up until its implementation. According to Lebanese television channel Al-Mayadeen, she will legally pursue Salameh.
The nearly 30 years Salameh has spent at the head of Lebanon’s central bank are now under greater scrutiny after the 2019 financial crash.
His alleged money laundering, embezzlement and laundering of several hundred million dollars at the central banking bank is under investigation in Lebanon and other European countries including Switzerland. This is a charge he repeatedly denies.
Salameh still has the support of influential figures, including Najib Mikati (billionaire prime minister), who believes Salameh should continue in his position as Lebanon fights its economic crisis.
