MOSCOW, (Reuters) – Some troops from Russia’s military district adjacent to Ukraine have returned to their base following a series of drills. This was reported by Russia’s defence ministry Tuesday.

Russia’s Interfax news agency reported that the ministry stated that although large-scale drills were continuing across the country, certain units from the Western and Southern military districts had finished their exercises and began returning to base.

These movements are contrary to the warnings by Britain and America that Russia could invade Ukraine anytime.

Liz Truss (British Foreign Secretary) stated that Britain must see the complete removal of Russian troops along Ukraine’s border to be convinced Moscow doesn’t intend an invasion.

The video footage was provided by the defense ministry, and published by RIA news agency. It showed tanks being loaded onto flatcars on the railway.

According to the ministry, trucks would be used to transport some equipment while troops could march on their own to base.

Russia now has over 100,000 troops close to Ukraine’s borders. This includes a significant contingent participating in joint drills with Belarus up until February 20, which means that Ukraine almost is surrounded by Russia.

The news was welcomed by the Russian market and the ruble, which had been in pressure from Western sanctions, rose 1.5% within a matter of minutes.

Moscow denied any intention to attack Ukraine. However, it demands legally binding guarantees by NATO and USA that Kyiv is not allowed to join NATO’s military bloc. Washington and Brussels, however, have refused to give such assurances.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, was to be met in Moscow by President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in an important mission to prevent war.
