SINGAPORE, (Reuters) – AirAsia Aviation Group announced Wednesday plans to launch a low-cost ridesharing service in Southeast Asia. The group signed a non-binding agreement with Avolon regarding at least 100 Vertical Aerospace X4 electric cars.

Tony Fernandes (chief executive at AirAsia parent Capital A) said flights could begin in 2025. Malaysian regulators are likely to approve Malaysian operations faster than the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.

AirAsia will offer ridesharing at affordable prices through its mobile app.

Fernandes stated that the product is not meant to be exclusive. We want this product to be available to everyone.

Avolon purchased 500 VX4 planes from Vertical Aerospace in 2013 and placed 90% of its orders with AirAsia and Japan Airlines.

Four-passenger VX4 with one pilot is anticipated to be capable of flying more than 100 mi (160 km). It’s one of the growing numbers of new players in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL).

Domhnal Slattery (CEO of Avolon) and Vertical Aerospace chairman said that VX4 pilot test flights will start in April.
