NEW YORK (Reuters] – On Wednesday, two former Goldman Sachs colleagues (NYSE:), will go on trial in Brooklyn for the theft of thousands of millions from Malaysia’s 1MDB sovereign asset fund. It is the largest scandal in Wall Street history.

Roger Ng is Goldman’s ex-head of Malaysian investment banking. He has been charged with conspiracy to launder money as well as violating an anti-bribery statute. Opening statements in his Brooklyn federal trial were made Monday by the prosecution. They stated that Ng (49) received millions of dollars in kickbacks to help embezzle 1MDB funds.

Prosecutors will summon their most important witness on Wednesday: Tim Leissner (a former Goldman partner, and Ng’s former boss in the bank’s Southeast Asia branch). Leissner (52), pleaded guilty in 2018 to money laundering, bribery and other charges. He also agreed to cooperate the government’s investigations.

Marc Agnifilo is Marc Agnifilo’s defense attorney. He stated in his opening statements that Ng has not pleaded guilty to the conspiracy allegedly orchestrated by Leissner, Jho Low and a Malaysian financial intermediary who helped 1MDB buy $6.5 billion worth of bonds.

Low was the accused mastermind of the scheme and was also indicted by the United States along with Ng in 2018. The U.S. and Malaysian authorities have not yet arrested him. Low’s U.S. attorney did not respond when Low requested comment.

U.S.prosecutors claim Goldman made $600 million from these deals and that approximately $4.5 billion was fraudulently obtained. Goldman paid nearly $3B in fines and made arrangements for the Malaysian affiliate to plead guilty before a U.S. Court.

Leissner is likely to be interrogated by the government regarding Ng’s possible involvement in a scheme for Ng to embezzle funds, use some of these funds to bribe Goldman officials, and keep some. The government has stated that Leissner’s testimony would be supported by additional evidence.

On Monday, prosecutor Wible told the court that “he’ll give to you an inside view” of the money laundering and bribery schemes.

Agnifilo argued that Leissner (who hasn’t been sentenced yet) has lied about Ng to prosecutors in an effort to lessen his sentence. Leissner was attacked by Agnifilo in his first statement. He was portrayed as a socioite who stole money to fund a luxurious lifestyle.

Leissner was scheduled to testify at 9:45 EST (13430 GMT). Leissner was not immediately available for comment.
