Thailand purchase of F-35 stealth jets depends on U.S. government, says Lockheed Martin exec -Breaking

(Reuters) – Thailand’s interest in Lockheed Martin (NYSE:) The F-35 stealth fighters are real, however, clearance for buying the jets by the U.S. government is an issue, according to a top defense executive.

Tim Cahill (Lockheed Martin senior vice president, Global Business), confirmed Thailand’s interest but stated that there is “nothing officially that I know of” relative to it.

The Southeast Asian nation’s air force had set aside $413 million in January to purchase four F-35s. The country’s Air Chief Marshall Napadej Daupatemiya stated earlier that Thailand was interested in purchasing eight F-35s.

Cahill declared that this would be an American government policy decision. Although there are some promising signs, I don’t know what the U.S. government is going to do about it.

F-35 fighter jets are considered highly sensitive and sold only to US allies. The F-35 is only available in Australia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore.

A request to comment was not received by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Political Military Affairs, Office of Congressional and Public Affairs outside of business hours.
