(Reuters) – Hundreds are expected to attend Thursday’s memorial service for Amir Locke. He was a Black man who was shot and killed in a raid on his Minneapolis apartment. This is the latest killing in a string of incidents that have triggered outrage at police treatment of racial minorities.
The Rev. After a public viewing in Minneapolis where Locke was killed in two highly-publicized killings, Al Sharpton (a prominent civil rights activist) will give a tribute to Locke.
Shiloh Temple International Ministries will host the service in Locke’s memory. This is also where Daunte Wright was killed in an accident while driving through a suburb.
Wright’s passing occurred one year after George Floyd died in the same incident. Floyd died in May 2020 when a Minneapolis cop used his knees to pin Floyd to the ground. Floyd’s tragic death was captured in a viral video and sparked protests across America.
Locke’s encounter with police ended in his death. This is similar to the circumstances surrounding Breonna Taylor (26-year-old Black girl who was shot and killed by police during raids on her Kentucky home). Taylor was not subject to the search warrant.
Locke was killed and shot by the police after they obtained a warrant for no-knock to enter his apartment in the course of an investigation into homicide. In the warrant, he was not identified.
Police released footage from the raid days after Locke’s death, on February 2. The video showed Locke, who was holding a gun while he lay on top of a blanket and sofa upon being summoned by officers. The police claim that he pointed the gun towards officers, before opening fire. Locke’s family disagrees with that.
Protests have been held downtown Minneapolis, drawing hundreds of people demanding justice and an end to all no-knock warrants.
Protesters claimed Locke was entitled to a firearm in his home. Locke never had the opportunity to arm himself during the chaos as the police stormed his apartment.
Jacob Frey, Minneapolis mayor has placed an end to such searches. Some state legislators are looking to pass legislation to restrict them.
