Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed that the Securities and Exchange Commission harassed him in an effort to limit his freedom of speech. This was part of a 2018 settlement that resolved civil securities cases against the executive.

Musk claimed in a court filing that “The SEC seems be targeting Mr. Musk, Tesla for unrelenting investigations largely because Mr. Musk continues to criticize the government,” he said Thursday. The new filing sought to close the agency’s 2018 securities case against Musk. Musk stated that the SEC made excessive efforts to intimidate him from exercising First Amendment rights and not to make it easier for them to apply generally applicable laws fairly.
