WASHINGTON (Reuters] – The U.S. should cancel the former president Donald Trump’s lease on a Washington historic building he converted into a luxury hotel.
The committee in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives said recent developments indicated his Trump Organization may have filed inaccurate financial statements when the government leased the property to him before he ran for president.
Carolyn Maloney and Gerald Connolly (leading Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform Committee) wrote to request that the U.S. General Services Administration, federal property manager, consider ending the lease rather than giving him permission to make a profit from it.
The authors wrote, “Noone should be rewarded if they provide false or misleading information or seek to profit from the presidency.”
Near the White House at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, it became a meeting point for Trump supporters as well as some foreign officials. It was also a point of contention for those who claimed that it infringed on ethics laws.
According to media reports, Trump’s firm reached an agreement last year to buy the hotel from Miami-based investment group CGI Merchant Group. This deal could bring him $100 million in profit.
Letitia James, New York’s Attorney General, accuses Trump of lying about their real estate assets to get bank loans and lower taxes. Trump, a Republican accuses James of a political witch hunting. James is a Democrat.
Mazars USA, Trump’s old accounting firm, stated this month that it can no longer back a decade-old set of financial statements. It also announced it was ending its relationship with the Trump Organization.
According to the committee, these developments have cast doubt upon the financial statements submitted by Trump Organization in 2010 and 2013 for the construction loan application.
