EU’s oil and petroleum consumption hit record low in 2020 -Breaking

(Reuters] – Pandemic regulations in 2020 led to a drop in oil consumption and petroleum usage in Europe’s energy use, which was the lowest since 30 years ago. This was according to Friday’s statement by the statistics office of the bloc.

Eurostat stated that final petroleum product and oil consumption in the region saw the sharpest decline ever recorded, with a drop of about 10% to 311 megatonnes oil equivalent (Mtoe). This was only one-year.

To curb COVID-19’s spread, the EU governments started to restrain people from moving around in March 2020. The result was a substantial drop in gasoline consumption.

In 2020, the use of kerosene type jet fuel, which reached 48.2Mtoe in 2019, sank to more than 56% due to travel restrictions that forced airlines cancelling flights.

Luxembourg saw the greatest drop in petroleum product and oil consumption for energy and other uses, 21% less than 2019.

The EU used renewable energy for 22% in 2020, as member countries increasingly turned to solar, wind and other energy sources to achieve its net-zero ambitions by 2050.

Eurostat uses harmonised methodologies to process comparable data from statistical authorities. This explains why the delay of two years in data.
