(Reuters) – Details about former U.S. President Donald Trump’s new social media app are trickling out as about 500 beta testers have begun using an early version of “Truth Social,” two sources told Reuters.
Truth Social was tested one year ago, after Trump’s ban from Facebook (NASDAQ), Twitter (NYSE) and Alphabet’s YouTube (NASDAQ). His new media and technology venture, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), has pledged to deliver an “engaging and censorship-free experience” on the app, which Chief Executive Devin Nunes has said will launch by the end of March.
TMTG continues to be shrouded under secrecy, and some tech and media leaders view it with suspicion. It is unclear if the app’s aim of freedom of expression will be compatible with Apple (NASDAQ)’s policies regarding app stores. TMTG did not respond immediately to our request for comment.
Liz Willis, a correspondent and vice president of operations at Right Side Broadcasting Network, told Reuters she received an email Tuesday stating that “T Media Tech LLC has invited you to test Truth Social.”
Willis was able download the app via TestFlight on her iPhone. The beta testing site TestFlight is Apple’s product for developers before launching apps in the App store. Willis stated Wednesday morning that users have posted on the Truth Social version for 24 hours.
Wayne Dupree (founder of WayneDupree.com) is one of the beta-testers. He also hosts a conservative podcast.
Dupree said that he could see Truth Social growing in popularity and not being suppressed on Twitter. He also added that currently there wasn’t an edit button.
I want to share the single father chronicles. Truth Social allows me to share my single dad stories with my fans.
Twitter denied that it is political biased.
A screenshot viewed on Reuters shows that Trump’s Truth Social account had 317 users as of late Wednesday. Before Twitter banned Trump, Trump had 88 millions followers.
Truth Social allows users to post and share a “truth” the same way they would do so with a tweet. Willis claims that there aren’t any ads. A second source with TMTG also confirmed this.
They can choose to follow whom they wish and their feed will include individual posts along with an RSS-like news feed. If someone mentions them or starts following them, they will be notified.
According to a screenshot, the app says that “A new direct messaging experience will be available soon. Please stay tuned.”
According to Reuters, several conservative media figures also have accounts. Reuters was unable to immediately contact these individuals for comment.
Trump’s account shows one “truth” that he posted three days ago, verified at the account of @realDonaldTrump with a red check and with the message: “Get Ready! Your favorite President will see you soon!”
Donald Trump Jr. tweeted about his father’s original post on Truth Social.
TMTG released an updated version, “Truth Social 0.9,” Wednesday morning. It is testing for bug fixes for “re-truths,” which is what it calls a retweet, “image aspect ratios and compression, improved error handling and account creation.”
On Wednesday morning Nunes, who joined the app on Feb. 10, posted: “Good morning Truth testers. Please screenshot any bugs when the screenshot preview comes up.”
A tester can take a screenshot of anything they dislike and send it to developers.
A message says: “Beta feedback and device information is collected and shared with the developer and it will be linked to your email address.”
