BAMAKO (Reuters). -Friday’s demand by Mali’s ruling military junta was for France to immediately withdraw troops from Mali, a junta spokesperson said.
Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga stated that France’s decision to pull out its forces from West Africa was unilateral and violated the military agreements between France and Mali.
Maiga stated on national television that “in view of its repeatedly breached defence agreements the government invites French officials to withdraw without delay the Barkhan, Takouba forces form the national territory under supervision by the Malian authorities.”
France and the colony’s former colony are now at a crossroads. The junta has reneged on an agreement for February elections and proposes to keep power through 2025.
On Thursday, the President Emmanuel Macron declared that troop withdrawal would be completed in four- to six months.
