REUTERS/Dado Ruvic(Reuters) – Moderna (NASDAQ:) Inc announced Friday that it was developing three vaccines based upon the same technology as its COVID-19 shot. One of these is for viral infection shingles.
Moderna-rivaled messenger RNA technology (mRNA) was key in the success of COVID-19 vaccinations. Pfizer (NYSE:) This has led to efforts to utilize the innovative technology in other therapies and vaccines for difficult-to-treat conditions.
Pfizer also has a mRNA-based vaccine against shingles in development and plans to start clinical trials by the end of 2022.
If both are successful, they will be competing against GlaxoSmithKline, (NYSE:),’s Shingrix vaccine in two doses, which was approved last year by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Shingles usually develop in people over 60 who are infected by varicella virus or chicken pox. The symptoms include a red, itchy, painful skin that usually disappears within one month.
Moderna’s varicella-zoster vaccine has been developed.
A cancer vaccine is being developed by the company, as well as a shot against herpes virus-2 which causes genital and sexually transmitted disorders.
