ABERYSTWYTH (Reuters) -On Friday, an Atlantic storm battered Britain & Ireland with winds up to 122 mph. It knocked out power to tens and thousands and forced planes to abandon landings. Trees were uprooted and roofs were torn off.

The Meteorological Office of Britain stated that Storm Eunice, which formed in the Atlantic and was then spun from the Azores to Europe by the jetstream, represented a risk to human lives.

According to Reuters photos, the storm struck western England and made landfall in Cornwall. Waves lashed the coastline, spraying plumes of water over cottage roofs.

Wales saw waves crashing over Aberystwyth promenade. As lines were cut and old trees were keeled, power went out to more than 100,000 residents.

Online footage showed that gusts in London blew parts off the Millennium Dome’s roof, shaking tall buildings.

Frank Saunders, Met Office Chief Meteorologist said that “Storm Eunice really packs a punch.” Red weather warnings are only issued when there’s a risk to human life.

The Met Office stated that a gust of 122 miles an hour (196 km/hr) was registered at The Needles, Isle of Wight. It is provisionally the highest gust recorded in England.

Some airports saw strong gusts so forcefully that planes had to be forced to land. Numerous flights were cancelled by airlines while others sought safe landings at different airports.

According to distributors, more than 100,000 buildings were without power. Trains and ferry services were cancelled.

An announcement board at Aberystwyth station stated that “Storm Eunice” – No Transport for Wales trains will run on this day. All trains from Kent in southern England were cancelled.

“We are closing all routes in Kent, and all lines in SE London are blocked by trees,” Network Rail Kent & Sussex said. Do not travel.

BA announced that they were cancelling several flights and would cause significant disruption.

DFDS, a Danish ferry operator said on Twitter (NYSE 🙂 its ferries from Calais to Dover (NYSE 🙂 were suspended because of high winds.

Red warnings like this are very rare. This warning was last issued on November 20, 2121. Scotland issued yellow warnings about heavy snow.

To discuss storm response, the British government will convene a COBR emergency meeting.

Britain’s security Minister Damian Hinds said that troops are available to handle the effects of severe weather.

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister said that all citizens should follow his advice and use safety precautions. “I want to thank the responders for all of their hard work.”
