WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – Former President Donald Trump brought classified information to Florida after leaving White House. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration sent a Friday letter to Congress about 15 boxes of documents that it had recently recovered.
According to the Archives, it informed Department of Justice about its findings. They would then handle any investigations.
David Ferriero (archivist of United States) wrote to Carolyn Maloney informing her that items within boxes were classified as national security information. Maloney is the chair of House oversight committee.
Maloney’s committee is investigating Trump’s handling records. Trump left office January 20, 2021.
“These new revelations deepen my concern about former President Trump’s flagrant disregard for federal records laws and the potential impact on our historical record,” Maloney said in a statement.
Trump wrote that the National Archives had not found anything. He stated that they gave them presidential records upon request to protect my legacy. This was in compliance with the Presidential Records Act.
“If this was anyone but “Trump,” there would be no story here.”
Ferriero’s letter also stated that White House employees used non-official electronic messaging account to conduct official business. These accounts were not forwarded or copied into official electronic messaging accounts. It was also stating that the White House is in process of finding some missing records.
The Washington Post revealed last week that Trump had taken some documents to his home, and they were marked classified. This may increase Trump’s legal pressure or those of his close aides.
Presidential Records Act: The Presidential Records Act mandates the preservation and protection of all memos, correspondence, notes, email, faxes, and any other writings related to presidents’ official duties.
Trump claimed executive privilege but was unsuccessful in his lawsuit to prevent the release of documents from the White House. These records included those to the House select Committee that investigated the attack by Trump supporters on the U.S Capitol Jan. 6, 2021.
