CNBC has been informed by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. She said that sanctions against Russia remain an option in case Russia invades Ukraine.
Von der Leyen answered Saturday’s question about whether sanctions could be imposed on Gazprom, the Russian giant of gas, when he said that “everything” was on the table.
Europe’s Gazprom imports 40% to 40%, according to the EU chief.
According to her, she has been reaching out to other suppliers with great success such as the United States.
“We received the most energy delivery in January.” [from elsewhere]”We know, by now, that we will make it through winter without Russian Gas but with supplies from others, so if we see a Russian Gaz decoupling, this would be an ominous retaliation.” Von der Leyen added.
Mario Draghi, the Prime Minister of Italy has stated that Russia shouldn’t be subject to sanctions. Italy is one of the countries that are most affected by Russia’s sanctions. largest importers of Russian gas in the European Union.
Von der Leyen maintained it was vital to consider all options. She noted that nearly two-thirds Russia’s energy exports are to Europe, which accounts for an important portion of Russia’s budget. It was therefore not smart for Russia to separate Europe from its gas supply.
Von der Leyen stated that she had assured Draghi Europe would get gas from other continents and that there was an infrastructure through Europe to transport the gas to Italy. This will ensure Italy’s safety.
When asked about the Russian threat to Ukraine, von der Leyen stated that “we all wish diplomacy would win, but prepare for the worse.”
Joe Biden, the President of the United States stated Friday that America believes Putin has decided to carry out an attack on Ukraine“In the next days.”
