WASHINGTON (Reuters), Despite mounting criticisms from Kyiv, and other domestic opponents, the Biden administration decided not to impose sanctions on Russia in advance of Russia’s widely expected invasion of Ukraine.
Britain and the United States have warned repeatedly in recent days about Russia’s imminent military invasion of Ukraine. Russia refutes this warning. U.S. officials claim that sanctioning Vladimir Putin’s government prior to he invades will only ensure such a crisis occurs instantly.
“The first purpose of sanctions is to stop Russia going to war,” Secretary Antony Blinken said. When you activate them, that means deterrence has ended,” Antony Blinken Secretary of State told CNN’s State of the Union.
Moscow has been threatened by the West with economic sanctions if it continues to press forward with its invasion. They claim that this would penalize state banks and Russian Oligarchs, restrict exports, and cripple Russia’s economy.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the Ukrainian president, and growing numbers of critics believe that sanctions should be applied immediately if they are certain Putin will invade.
“You tell me 100% that there will be war in a few days’ time. Why are you still waiting? Zelenskiy was frustrated and asked audience members at Saturday’s Munich Security Conference if they were still interested in imposing sanctions on Russia.
Zelenskiy declared that after a bombardment occurs, after our state gets shot at, or if there are no borders to the country, our economy is not functioning or some of our state’s territory is under occupation.
U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris spoke to journalists in Munich and said that the sanctions she would impose would be among the “greatest, if not strongest,” in human history. However, Harris echoed Blinken’s belief that there is still a way to prevent Putin from invading.
“We agreed that the deterrence effects of sanctions are still meaningful, particularly because — keep in mind also — we still believe that there will be a diplomatic solution to this situation.
Fox News Sunday’s Ted Cruz (Republican Senator) asked if America has done all it can to end Putin. He said, “Not remotely and tragically,” that Europe was on the brink of war due to the weakness and fecklessness shown by Joe Biden.
John Kirby, Pentagon Press Secretary (NYSE:), stated that Russia sanctioning now would result in an invasion.
“If you punish someone for something they haven’t done yet then they might as well just go ahead and do it,” John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said on Fox News Sunday.
Boris Johnson (British Prime Minister) stated Sunday that the United States of America and Britain will block Russian companies’ access U.S. Dollars and British Pounds if ordered by the Kremlin. Boris Johnson stated that the Western sanctions would be more severe than those he suggested previously in public.
This story is rewritten to clarify in paragraphs 12 and 10 that Kirby was speaking on Fox News Sunday with Cruz.
