Biden set to order sanctions on separatist regions of Ukraine after Putin decree

WASHINGTON – The White House said Monday afternoon it was ready to respond immediately to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to recognize the independence of two breakaway regionsThe eastern Ukraine
Jen Psaki (White House press secretary) stated that Biden would sign an Executive Order prohibiting U.S. people from investing, trading, and financing in “the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic or Luhansk People’s Republic region of Ukraine.”
Psaki stated in a statement that these are not the same as and would go along with swift and severe economic actions he had been planning in coordination and support from allies in case Russia invades Ukraine.
Psaki also stated that Treasury and the Departments of State will soon share more details about the actions of the Biden administration.
Putin’s announcement to recognise the Donetsk People’s Republic (or Luhansk People’s Republic) was made Monday night in a televised hour.
European leaders have also condemned Putin’s declaration and made new threats to address the “blatant breach of international laws.”
“The [European]Union will impose sanctions on those who are involved in this criminal act. In a joint statement, President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission and Charles Michel from the European Council stated that they reiterate their support for Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty within internationally recognised borders.
