GENEVA, (Reuters) – The United Nations Human Rights Expert on Myanmar Tuesday claimed that Russia and China provided the junta fighter jets used against civilians. He urged the U.N. Security Council not to allow the weapons-enabling atrocities flow.

Thomas Andrews was a U.S. ex-congressionman and served as an independent member of the commission. His report also listed Serbia as one the three suppliers to Myanmar’s military in recent years, “full knowledge they would be used for civilian attacks”.

Andrews made the following statement: “It ought to be incontrovertible, that weapons used to murder civilians shouldn’t be transferred to Myanmar.”

Since a coup overthrew a decade-old tentative democracy, chaos has gripped Myanmar. This triggered nationwide protests which troops suppressed using lethal force.

According to U.N. activists, more than 1,500 civilians have been reported as having been killed.

It claims it is fighting terrorists and opposes interference from the U.N.

For comment, the Myanmar Military and Foreign Ministries of Russia and Serbia were unable to reach them immediately.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said, when asked about the report during a briefing that China had “always advocated for all parties and factions to proceed in the long term interests of the country” as well as “resolve conflicts through political dialogue”.

U.N. Human Rights Groups have accused the U.N. of accusing the junta in using unjustified force to defeat militias and ethnic rebels.

According to the report, Russia supplied two types of fighter planes and two types of drones as well as two types of armoured vehicle, including one equipped with air defense systems. According to the report, China provided fighter jets and Serbia supplied rockets as well as artillery rounds.

Andrews stated that the U.N. General Assembly passed a resolution calling for arms transfers to Myanmar’s military to be halted.

Serbia voted yes to the resolution. Russia, China and Taiwan abstained.

China may have called for an end to hostilities, but Russia is the most trusted diplomatic ally of the generals in the face of West-led attempts to isolate them.

Andrews called for the reduction of Myanmar’s oil revenue, foreign exchange reserves and access to oil. He also suggested that international sanctions be placed on Myanmar timber, gems and rare earths purchases.

The report stated that Myanmar’s rulers are vulnerable and can be stopped through international resolve.

He stated that if revenues are cut, the ability of the junta to terrorize and attack the Myanmar people will decrease.”
