NEW YORK, (Reuters) – The ex-head of one of New York City’s police unions is expected to make a court appearance in Federal Court on Wednesday. This comes nearly five months since his resignation following a federal investigation into the labor organisation.
The Sergeants Benevolent Association’s first president, Ed Mullins was released from custody on Wednesday afternoon. However, his situation could change throughout the day, a source said to Reuters.
This hearing will take place at Manhattan’s U.S. District Court. According to NBC 4 New York’s “multiple police source,” prosecutors have indicated that they are prepared to bring federal charges against Mullins. It was not clear at this time what the charges would be and when they would take effect.
Mullins was known for his criticisms of Bill de Blasio’s policies. He was detained on Wednesday morning according to local media, citing FBI. Reuters was unable to reach the law enforcement agency immediately for comment.
The union did not comment. According to the Facebook profile (NASDAQ:), it represents 12,000 members, current and former, of America’s largest police force.
The union board asked for Mullins to resign last October after a federal corruption investigation that included raids on Mullins’ Long Island home and the SBA headquarters in Manhattan. Mullins also quit the NYPD position he was holding at the time of the raid.
De Blasio applauded his resignation.
He tweeted, “Ed Mullins dishonoured his uniform and city as well as his union more times that I can count” He said, “It was only a matterof time before his inexplicable hatred would catch up with [him].”
