WASHINGTON (Reuters] – U.S. regulators disagree with Meta Platforms Inc about when to open an antitrust trial. While the Federal Trade Commission proposes that the trial should be opened in December 2023, Meta Platforms Inc asks for additional time.

The FTC filed a late-night filing with the U.S. District Court Washington on Tuesday. It proposed that the date Dec. 11, 2023 be used for discovery purposes, as well as data production.

Meta (which includes Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) representatives called the proposal “unrealistic and unfair to Meta”. They stated it would take until February 13th 2024 to complete discovery.

A U.S. Judge rejected last month’s attempt by the social media company to dismiss the lawsuit against the government and stated that the FTC presented a convincing case which should permit it to continue.

The lawsuit accuses Meta, the U.S. government of buying or crushing rivals. It also seeks to force Meta to sell messaging app WhatsApp and photo-sharing app Instagram.

As part of an overall effort to combat Big Tech’s vast market power, the lawsuit against the company is the most significant.
