(Reuters) – Centene (NYSE:) Corp announced Thursday that its board approved a request by Michael Neidorff, its chief executive officer and chairman, for a medical leave period. This decision is effective immediately.

James Dallas was appointed acting chairman by the company. It stated it expected to name a replacement CEO in the first quarter of 2012.

After serving for over a quarter-century, Neidorff had signed a contract with Politan Capital Management.

Centene, which established the office of president in July, laid the foundation for a succession program. Neidorff (CEO since 1996) stated publicly that he did not anticipate renewing his chief’s contract.
