UNITED NATIONS – United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres pleaded with Vladimir Putin on Wednesday for an immediate halt to war ‘in defense of humanity’. This was after Putin had announced a military campaign in the eastern Ukraine.

Guterres spoke after an emergency meeting on Ukraine of the Security Council.

A war in Ukraine would have catastrophic consequences and have far-reaching effects on the global economy.
