BERLIN (Reuters). Mercedes-Benz is hoping to obtain certification in Level 3 autonomous driving in America this year. Discussions with Chinese authorities are continuing, Ola Kaellenius, chief executive, stated in a Thursday press conference.

Kaellenius indicated that they are currently working with the United States to certify such a technology. Kaellenius had previously stated that the automaker wanted Level 3 autonomous driving in other countries.

Mercedes-Benz was first to be granted clearance by Germany’s auto watchdog in December for semi-autonomous driving systems that were based on the technical requirements set out in United Nations regulations.

The company plans to sell the S-Class with Driver Pilot to German customers during the first half 2022.
