SEOUL (Reuters). President Moon Jae-in stated Thursday that South Korea will join other countries in imposing economic sanctions against Russia for its military actions in Ukraine.

Russian forces launched missiles at several locations in Ukraine, and troops landed on the coast of Ukraine on Thursday. Officials and media reported that this was done after President Vladimir Putin approved what he called an “exceptional military operation in east”.

Moon spoke at a National Security Council meeting, Seoul. Park Soo Hyun, press secretary told a briefing that Moon stressed the need to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territory.

Moon stated that “the use of military force which causes injury to innocent lives cannot ever be justified”

South Korea will support the international community’s efforts to restrain armed aggression and seek a peaceful resolution, including by joining in economic sanctions, Moon added.

Park has not provided any details about the potential sanctions.
