President Joe Biden has decided on his Supreme Court nominee, two sources familiar with the situation confirmed Thursday night.
The president didn’t specify who he would nominate as Justice Stephen Breyer’s successor. Justice Breyer is currently retiring.
Ketanji Jackson and J. Michelle Childs were named as finalists. They are federal judges and California Supreme Court Justice Leondra Kriger. According to sources familiar with this matter, Biden spoke with three judges.
Sources indicated that an announcement may be made by Thursday.
CNN first reported Biden was able to reach a decision.
According to the White House, Biden is a Presidential Candidate. pledged to nominate a Black woman to the court for the first time in U.S. history, will make his decision known by Monday.
Earlier Thursday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the administration was on track to make an announcement by Monday, but when she was asked whether a final decision had been made, she said: “Not a ‘final final.'”
“No job offer was made,” she said.
NBC News reported Thursday that Biden had a meeting in the Oval Office on Wednesday with Dana Remus, the White House counsel, and his director of legislative affairs, Louisa Terrell, on consultations with senators about the Supreme Court.
Breyer (83), announced last month his intention to retire at the expiration of the term on the Supreme Court. With 27 years on the bench, he is the second-longest-serving justice after Clarence Thomas.
